Many people have a story they want to tell. However, getting your voice heard in the multitude of ideas out there is difficult. More people are resolving to tell their stories themselves through movies. This is a great way to control your project so you get the movie you want. Creating your own movie involves knowing something about film making. Improve your basic knowledge of film making, so you can get one step closer to creating your masterpiece.

First, watch films. This sounds simple but can provide new insight into films. Instead of simply viewing a film, think about what you’re watching. Why did the director choose that camera angle? How does the lighting enhance the mood of the film? Ask yourself questions about what you watched and pay attention to the technical aspects.

Next, you need to actually go behind the scenes. Whether you can see a film be made, talk to filmmakers or just read a book, this will provide an abundance of knowledge. You need to know the basic film making terms, what film makers consider, and the process of how a film gets made. There are many seminars, film making groups, and even online experts.

Exposing yourself to the world of film by watching movies, witnessing a film get made, and talking to film makers will provide you with more knowledge about films. These are some of the best ways to increase your general knowledge of the film making process.

The first question to ask oneself when you are looking to purchase a quality lens for film making purposes is what exactly are you shooting? Will your film be primarily of large open landscapes, close ups of people’s faces, action scenes or a combination of them all? Some lenses will allow you to frame many different scenarios with just one lens… but others, say close ups of extremely small objects … such as if you were doing a documentary on a certain breed of insect… might require a special lens to accommodate smaller subject matters in such intimate detail. The second question to ask is what is the mood of your film? In other words, what kind of film and lighting will you be using. A film dedicated to the dark realms of say, film noir will require lenses that can open up and capture what you are looking for in extremely low light settings. Or will you be shooting primarily outdoors in the day time where light is in much abundance. Will the lighting be artificial or natural, is the film color or black and white? All of these answers will point you in the direction of finding the correct lens or combination thereof to meet all of your film making needs.

It is common for beginning filmmakers to realize that there is more to their new craft than pointing a camera and hitting record. In fact, making a great film is no easier than a beautiful painting, a groundbreaking new genre sculpture, or a brilliant piece of choreography–but by knowing where to start in filmmaking, you can absolutely succeed at it.

LEARN THE BASICS.

Make sure you absorb point of view, and all different shots and angles; but most importantly, get to know the psychological implications each have. Think about where you place subjects, and think of the rectangular moving image as a picture plane for every frame (or group of frames).

On the subject of frames, know your camera! You don’t need a great one to make an incredible film, but maximize your control of it. Get familiar with the zooms, lighting options and if it’s digital, pixel counts.

IT’S WHAT’S INSIDE THAT COUNTS.

Apart from how your film looks, make sure you plan ahead for other aspects that will change its feel. If you have actors or performers, decide if they need a script and make sure they know what they are supposed to convey. If your film is a documentary or live action, you may find that little can be done to control what happens, and to an extent you can expect the unexpected.

IT’S ALL IN THE EDITING.

Well, maybe editing alone can’t entirely make or break a time based work, but it certainly carries a huge portion of that weight. Know how you are using a film editing machine or digital video editing platform before you start. Always have more than one copy of film if possible, and back up digital video files in several places. Allow for editing to take time, and be careful with every second on the edge of a clip. When you think you’re nearing completion, watch the edited footage with your undivided attention several times.

TELL ME WHAT YOU THINK!

Feedback and critique are imperative to your work as an artist, and especially as a beginning filmmaker. Get all sorts of opinions, from other filmmakers, artists, friends, family, colleagues, and teachers.
